Tantôt la souffrance expiatoire se mue en plaisir doloriste ; tantôt, au nom de la jouissance, les personnages libertins revendiquent l’absence de remords, défiant une société dans laquelle l’Église tente de restaurer son autorité morale. Parallèlement, la sécularisation du mariage déplace la culpabilité amoureuse du registre théologique vers la sphère sociale. L’analyse d’un corpus romanesque et théâtral varié nous permettra ainsi d’explorer la manière dont le remords amoureux constitue chez Musset l’expression d’une conscience romantique en mutation, tout en servant d’instrument à la critique des normes sociales et morales dominantes au XIXe siècle. In Musset's work, remorse most often stems from a fault in love. Sometimes suffering as an expiation turns into dolorous pleasure; sometimes, in the name of pleasure, the libertine characters claim the absence of remorse, defying a society in which the Church is trying to restore its moral authority. At the same time, the secularisation of marriage shifts the guilt of love from the theological register to the social sphere.
