S’intéresser aux couleurs du roman, c’est toucher au plus près de l’image mentale que l’auteur souhaite imprimer dans l’esprit du lecteur. L’œuvre est d’abord conçue comme un art du clair-obscur, mais elle manie aussi la palette primaire de la triade blanc-noir-rouge. Reste ouverte la question de l’enjeu de cette poétique coloriste : l’article vise à montrer que lumière et Lumières, ténèbres et obscurantisme ne se recouvrent pas complètement et que la fascination des images dépasse de beaucoup la simple métaphore philosophique. The aim here is to examine a point that has been relatively neglected by critics who have been interested in the pictorial dimension of the “paintings” present in La Religieuse and which is nevertheless a decisive point for Diderot the art critic: colour. To take an interest in the colours of the novel is to get as close as possible to the mental image that the author wishes to imprint on the reader's mind. The work is primarily conceived as an art of chiaroscuro, but it also handles the primary palette of the white-black-red triad.
