On tente ici de montrer que son application au roman de Diderot n’est pas moins en contradiction avec l’expérience commune de lecture qu’il a suscitée historiquement et avec le discours tenu par l’auteur sur son œuvre. The theory of the unreliable narrator, developed by Wayne Booth in a book published in the early 1960s, seems, in view of the significant gap that can be observed between the philosophical convictions of the philosopher and the beliefs of his narrator, to be able find in La Religieuse a textbook case.
